Two Way Immersion ProgramOur Two Way Immersion program is in its 3rd year of implementation. The programming originally began as a Bilingual Program five years ago. The Two Way Immersion Program began when we opened the classrooms to native English-speaking students to learn Spanish side by side with our native Spanish-speaking students. The Goals of the program are as follows: - Students will develop high levels of proficiency in their first language
- All students will develop high levels of proficiency in a second language
- All students will demonstrate positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors
We are recruiting for two Kindergarten sections next year. When our students enter Kindergarten, they are taught letters and sounds (phonemic awareness and phonics) in Spanish first. Kindergarten and 1st graders are taught formal literacy skills in Spanish, learning to read and write in Spanish first. In second grade the students begin to transfer their fundamental literacy skills to reading and writing in English, especially toward the second semester. By the time our students enter third grade, they are able to read and write in English. Our Model is known as the 90/10 model. In a 90/10 model, 90% of instruction in the first two years is in Spanish and 10% in English. Over the course of the primary grades, the percentage of instruction in the minority language decreases while the percentage of instruction in English increases. By 5th grade, instructional time in each language reaches a 50/50 ratio. To ENROLL call 720-2700 or visit Moon School at 1826 Hoyt St.
